Artist Statement
My art is the way it is because of multiple inspirations. One main inspiration are all of my friends. Photography was something we were interested in, especially surf photography. It brought us closer together and we were able to critique each other’s photography and learn from each other. Another inspiration are my photography teachers. They both have given me very helpful advice to continue one of my favorite hobbies and also to make my work better. My goals in photography are to shoot more often because even though I only shoot whenever I want to, I always have a sense of happiness whenever I get a shot I really like. That feeling is what drives me to continue photography throughout high school and hopefully through college. I would love to keep this hobby in my life for a very long time.
I’ve made multiple decisions in photography that have really changed my style. One very important decision I made was transitioning from surf photography to landscape and portrait photography. I knew that surf photography wasn’t something that I really enjoyed because of its difficult. Although it was very hard to get a great shot in surf photography, I always managed to get something. Since surf photography also included a lot of expensive materials, I decided to stick to landscape. I’m very happy that I had switched to landscape because it is something I’d rather pursue because I feel like more of my photos turn out good. One way I select materials or places is the way I see it normally. If i’m looking out at a beautiful view, I’m going to stop and take photos. The way I see it in my eyes is what makes my choice on if I am going to take photos or not.
Like I said earlier, I had switched from surf photography to landscape and portrait photography. I switched because the expense but also because now a days, it is very mainstream to see surf photos, generally because of the invention of the “Go-Pro.” My current work includes a lot of landscape photos and a lot of portraits. I am very interested in the topic of human expression. It’s interesting to me because people’s expression shows a lot of how the person is at all times. It makes me wonder if this is what they look like all the time or is it how the look when they are told to take a photo. I’m not sure what my next project is going to look like, but I do like exploring portraits. Although I really love landscape and portraits, It is not guaranteed that I will work on that.
